The Gold Treatment

Jewelry Manufacturer’s Exchange has a validated gold, platinum and silver testing system that has been fine-tuned to provide you with the most accurate assessment of your items possible. By combining our own professional, trained staff and committed business partners, JME has successfully been labeled the Trusted Consumer Gold Buyer.

Armed with technology and a qualified workforce, Jewelry Manufacturer’s Exchange prides itself on accurately testing your gold. In order to ensure precision our expert testers have various testing methods available to them.

Visual Testing
Once your unwanted gold, platinum and silver arrives to us at JME the testing process begins. Your items are documented and photographed for your protection and are then visually inspected for markings indicating either karat-weight (i.e. 10 karat, 14 karat, 18 karat, 22 karat or 24 karat) for gold items or validity of silver and platinum pieces. Your items are then separated by karat-weight and metal type to be further tested. We test every item, even when labels are visible, to verify that we are giving you the most accurate information possible about your items. Items that are not labeled are sorted separately and will also be tested further to determine their karat-weight or metal classification.

Once we have completed our Visual Test, we put every piece of gold, platinum or silver through a second test to confirm the karat-weight or metal classification indicated by our Visual Test.

Scratch Testing
One of the most reliable and common methods of testing gold, platinum and silver is Scratch Testing. This is done by scratching a very small amount of the item against a touchstone and by using a low-level acid that corresponds to the karat-weight being tested for or the metal classification being tested for (for platinum and silver items). The acid is utilized to verify the karat-weight of the gold and the validity of silver and platinum items. Acids are created for testing every karat-weight of gold and there are also acids for testing silver and platinum.

By using the Scratch Test we can determine accurately what karat-weight of gold is in an item or whether an item is truly platinum or silver.

With the help of precise and quality testing we have kept our customers happy by being able to pay them the most accurate amount on the items they bring in to our stores or send in to our processing location.

X-Ray Fluorescence Testing
If ever our staff at Jewelry Manufacturer’s Exchange is not satisfied with the results of a Scratch Test we have off-site X-Ray Fluorescence Testing available to verify the quality of the items we are uncertain about. Our expert business partners make their X-Ray Fluorescence Testing available to us to help us further satisfy our customers. Fluorescence Testing is a fairly new method of evaluating the purity of your unwanted gold. It is the latest in state-of-the-art technology in gold testing and it ensures that we are providing you the most exact information about the gold you send in, so that we can pay you the best possible amount for your items.

X-Ray Fluorescence Testing measures your gold’s karat-weight by weighing the intensity of the generated gold X-rays by a wavelength dispersion analysis. Once the testing is finished our report tells us the amount of actual gold in the items we received as well as quantities of other metals such as copper, silver or zinc. This is an accurate and reliable way of testing gold.

Diamond & Gemstone Testing
Diamonds and gemstones are also tested, at your request, for validity so that we can process them with the rest of your items and offer you a price based on current market values and stone size. We are also happy to remove any stones and return them to you if you do not wish to sell them.

Diamonds are tested with a certified Diamond tester, and are sized and graded based on standard GIA classifications. Gemstones are evaluated by a Master Jeweler, and other gemstone experts, to determine type and quality of the stone, and are then sized based on standard measurements. With both diamonds and gem stones, we pride ourselves on being able to offer you the best price possible!
